Open and responsive government

Making All Voices Count works across a number of overlapping and mutually reinforcing thematic areas. Many of the projects we support are not easily categorised by theme: some fall into more than one of our thematic areas, while some are not quite a natural fit for any of them.

Projects under the theme of open and responsive government are working to make information on government activity, budgets and services accessible and user-friendly for civil society, media and the public – from monitoring government procurement in Indonesia, to publicising where freedom of information requests go un-answered in Nigeria.

They are also working to support government to gather, analyse and act on information provided by citizens – from embedding community feedback in health system monitoring in Pakistan, to incorporating opinions of victims of sexual violence in the development of support services in South Africa.

Research under this theme asks what makes government actors change their behaviour and act responsively, and what kinds of citizen engagement lead to what kind of government responsiveness.
