In Sekondi-Takoradi, as in the rest of Ghana, very few women are involved in politics.
Across the country, less than 10% of Members of Parliament are female and, despite Ghana's vibrant women's movement, women’s voices are often excluded from public debate at the local, municipal and national levels.
Technology may offer new avenues for women to express their concerns and to get involved in politics - but we need to better understand whether, where and how this is possible.
Project
Building on their experiences in 'Our City, Our Say' funded through Making All Voices Count, the Global Communities team is trying to understand this issue better.
Our City, Our Say works with the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) to ensure the poorest residents of the city, and particularly women, have a voice in prioritising and improving the city’s service delivery. They work with Citizen Report Cards, a radio programme and a toll free customer service hotline - the first of its kind in Ghana.
With the practitioner research grant, the team are testing new ways of reaching women, analysing not only their current services - and how to improve them - but also finding out what more technology can offer to support the engagement of women in Sekondi-Takoradi.
