On December 4, 2014 during Making All Voices Count’s Pitching Event in partnership with ANSA-EAP, #EdTech, the urgency to develop new ways to strengthen response and resilience to humanitarian disaster in the Philippines was acutely felt.

As reported by ABC News, villagers fled their homes as it was predicted the Typhoon would hit the Eastern Samar province on Saturday.

Innovators share their ideas at #EdTech in Tagaytay, Phillipines

The #EdTech Event, hosted in Tagaytay City, Philippines, saw seven innovators present their idea, each with a solution for how to improve accountability in education and strengthen response to humanitarian crisis.

Making All Voices Count supports new and existing innovations to empower citizens and secure more open governance. Pitching Events are one way of surfacing new innovations, with the intention of further developing innovators’ capacity and concept.

Winners:

1. ProduktiBibo: Aims to establish a culture of disaster preparedness and resiliency among students through the adoption of a Student Quality Circle (SQC) programme, focusessed on innovation and problem solving. Student leaders will identify, analyse and address risks and disaster-related problems within their communities through productivity tools and techniques. These SQCs will develop cases (projects) based on identified DRRM issues and solutions. These cases will be presented, evaluated and monitored through the ProduktiBibo program in support of UNISDR’s “Safe Schools” initiative.

2. CrossSector Mapping for Resiliency: Teaches communities to learn how to use OpenStreetMap and Ushahidi – in partnership with local schools – to map the disaster risk and needs of their communities.

Our cross sector approach elevates mapping to the core infrastructure of government and society, using a cross sector approach to share information and ideas, identify risk and collaborate together to address risks in a transparent process.

Incubation:

Winners will now participate in a process of incubation in which they’ll receive mentoring from Making All Voices Count’s South to South Lab for up to six months. This is to prepare them for a potential grant.
