As the third most disaster prone country in the world, the Philippines experiences the constant threat of typhoons, tsunamis, storm surges, floods, landslides, drought, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. With over 7,000 islands, poor urban planning, extreme poverty, high population growth, corruption, environmental degradation and climate change, the impact on communities, food security and economic development is unrelenting.
This year, for the first time, the International Conference of Crisis Mappers (ICCM) is being held in Southeast Asia. From September 28 to October 5, 2016, the Philippines will host a huge range of organisations focussed around a theme of Building Resilience: Inclusive Innovations in Crisis Mapping.
The event will draw on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and will highlight how local citizens, business, NGOs, schools, government and technical communities can work better together with more accessible tools to strengthen the resilience of our communities.
The International Network of Crisis Mappers is the largest and most active international community of experts, practitioners, policymakers, technologists, researchers, journalists, scholars, hackers and skilled volunteers engaged at the intersection of humanitarian crises, new technology, crowd-sourcing, and crisis mapping.
The Crisis Mappers Network was launched at the first ICCM in 2009. As the world’s premier humanitarian technology forum, they engage over 8,000 members in over 160 countries, who are affiliated with over 3,000 different institutions, including more than 400 universities, 50 United Nations agencies & projects, first responders operating in both the civilian and military space, dozens of leading technology companies, several volunteer & technical community networks and global, national, and local humanitarian and disaster response and recovery organizations. Recent efforts during Philippine Super Typhoon Haiyan and Nepal Earthquake have received coverage in popular media outlets.
