The Open Knowledge Festival 2014 is set to be the biggest open data and open knowledge event to date. It will be global, inclusive and participatory.

Making All Voices Count is supporting session, Using Open Data to Follow the Money at 12.00 - 13.00 July 16, 2014.

One year ago the Follow the Money network kicked off with a conversation at OKCon about the value of financial data across civil society organisations - from extractive industry and corruption to companies and budgets. The network was launched to connect various existing communities, including international transparency organisations, local campaign groups, investigative journalists, data wranglers, and civic hackers interested in joining the dots between different sources of information about public money. This session will reflect on success and challenges the network faced over the the last year and start to lay out a path forward.

This session will present and discuss a series of cases where multiple sources of open financial data have been used for campaigning purposes and to discuss the challenges that were faced and how these challenges were overcome. For example, how can project level revenue data from the extractive industry be used with company data to understand revenue flows?

This session will:

• outline best practises of how to develop methods using open financial data from across sectors
• create tangible next steps, such as developing principles to ensure open data is a key requirement in fiscal transparency campaigning
• map activities to explain the different ways that public money flows from revenues to results
• discuss investigations and projects which enable citizens to follow the money in different areas.
