When conflict spills over and threatens to become violent, it is grassroots organisations and ordinary citizens that first see the warning signs. Yet efforts to raise the alarm and build collective responses are slow and often go unnoticed. New technologies have the potential to facilitate better connections between citizens and leaders, but they cannot replace relationships of trust and cooperation.

Since 2014 we’ve been researching how citizens help prevent violence, and the role of technology, in South Africa, Uganda and Tanzania. This collab

orative effort is led by the Action Support Centre, working with Coventry University, Gauteng Local Peace Committees (South Africa), the Zanzibar Interfaith Centre (Tanzania), and People’s Voice for Peace (Uganda). It is funded by Making All Voices Count.
